Overview

It has replaced the once performed axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) for the staging of clinically node negative axilla or with 1 or 2 positive sentinel lymph nodes in invasive breast cancer. It is based on randomized clinical data that have demonstrated equivalent survival between SLNB and ALND with reduced morbidity for SLNB alone
