The Department of General Surgery and Digestive Diseases is committed to providing tertiary-level care to patients with various gastroenterological and surgical diseases. The team is led by Prof. Dr. Sunil Kumar Sharma Dhakal, FRCSEd with Senior Consultant Dr. Pranil Rai, Consultant Dr. Nirvan Rai, and Junior Consultant Dr. Subodh Ghimire and it provides a comprehensive treatment for many complex abdominal operations using the advanced skill sets and multidisciplinary approach. Our highly dedicated, motivated, and skilled surgeons provide their services without leaving a single stone unturned. All four surgeons have their own expertise.
Prof. Sharma with a 25-year-old surgical career has led the way in advancing Laparoscopic as well as oncosurgical procedures. He initiated the gold standard D2 Gastrectomy for cancer stomach way back in 2001. He has a vast experience in hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and colorectal surgery. He has established strict oncosurgical procedures in breast cancer. Starting with Liver resections and Whipple’s procedure Prof. Sharma initiated TME as well as Total Mesocolic Excision for colonic tumors. He started breast-conservative surgery in the 2000s. On his return, Prof. Sharma initiated his vision of propagating Laparoscopic surgery in the country. Having performed more than 17,000 Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Prof. Sharma has been a trainer to quite a few number of imminent surgeons of the country. He initiated advanced Laparoscopic Surgery in Nepal namely Laparoscopic CBD exploration, Laparoscopic Fundoplication, Laparoscopic Hernia, and Laparoscopic Colorectal surgery.
Dr. Pranil Rai with his calm and composed personality and 16 years of experience consolidates the department. His highly skilled surgical expertise has strengthened the department in laparoscopic procedures. Dr. Rai is one of the pioneer surgeons in Nepal in Endo Laparoscopic Surgery and has ventured into Laparoscopic Hellers, Laparoscopic Fundoplication, Bariatric Surgery, Laparoscopic Gastrojejunostomy, Laparoscopic colectomy along with Laparoscopic Abdominoperineal resection along with routine Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, Laparoscopic CBD exploration, and Laparoscopic Hernia.
Dr. Nirvan Rai, our third member is a young dynamic surgeon with 7 years of experience. His highly precise and accurate surgery has earned a name among his colleagues. Dr. Nirvan has developed expertise in Port placement and Laparoscopic Hernia surgery. Apart from IPOM plus and TEP, TAPP Dr. Rai performs complex procedures such as TARR and extended TEP. He is also a very astute emerging surgeon dealing with all needful cases in an emergency.
Lastly, Dr. Subodh Ghimire with 4 years of surgical experience is a budding junior consultant aiding in the huge clinical load and emergency cases.
We provide 24-hour surgical care with Minimally invasive surgery even in off hours for emergency procedures like Laparoscopic Appendectomy, Laparoscopic Perforation Repair, Diagnostic Laparoscopy, and proceed. Apart from mentioned above, in the emergency service provided we routinely perform exploration in blunt and penetrating trauma, Road Traffic Accidents, bowel obstruction, and obstructed hernia.

We also have excellent results in perianal fistula (both complex and recurrent) and hemorrhoid surgery with a never-ending emphasis on newer techniques.
We routinely perform diagnostic and therapeutic Upper and Lower GI endoscopies.
We are the forerunner department in regard to surgical nutrition. We routinely follow the ERAS protocol for the recovery of patients. Adhering to the ERAS guidelines we admit most of our patients on the day of surgery and discharge them early. The use of drains and tubes is also minimal in our patients. We also host a regular multidisciplinary meetings to tailor the treatment of patients.
In the last 3 years, we have more than 1700 cases under our sleeve. The enthusiastic department in regularly engaged in teaching learning activities and has hosted multiple seminars which were well acknowledged by the participants.
