Dr. Gopal Raman Sharma is a renowned Neurosurgeon and the Professor and Head of the Department of Neurosciences at Nepal Mediciti. He brings extensive experience in neurosurgery, specializing in neurovascular surgery and skull base surgery. Dr. Sharma graduated with a medical degree from the Institute of Medicine (IOM), Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), Kathmandu, Nepal, in 1990. After joining the Nepal Government service in 1991, he served in remote districts before transferring to Bir Hospital, Kathmandu, where he began his career in the Department of Neurosurgery.
He completed his neurosurgical residency at the prestigious Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Karachi, Pakistan, and earned a Master’s Degree (MS) in Neurosurgery from Karachi University in 2000. Returning to Nepal, Dr. Sharma practiced at the Department of Neurosurgery, National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), Bir Hospital, contributing significantly to neurosurgical care and training.
Dr. Sharma further enhanced his expertise through advanced fellowships in neurovascular surgery at Kurume University, Japan (2010) and Helsinki University, Finland (2013). He is a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS, USA, 2014) and was honored as an International Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (IFAANS, USA, 2017).
With over 18,000 major neurosurgical procedures performed, Dr. Sharma is a leading expert in microsurgical clipping of cerebral aneurysms—having completed more than 500 successful cases—and has excised over 50 cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) with excellent patient outcomes.
He is actively engaged in clinical practice, academic research, and neurosurgical education, having presented more than 135 scientific papers at over 100 national and international neurosurgical conferences. Dr. Sharma has delivered 44 guest lectures on topics including cerebral aneurysms, AVMs, and skull base tumor surgeries, and has chaired multiple scientific sessions. He also plays a key role in organizing and conducting neurosurgical workshops to advance the field in Nepal and internationally.

Dr. Sharma has already published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles in national and international neurosurgical journals.
Dr. Sharma has been awarded “OV Jooma Gold Medal (1997)”, “The Birendra – Aishwarya Medal (2001)”, “B & B Best Paper Award (2002)” and “The Best Doctor of the Year Award (2007) and (2011)” by NAMS, Bir Hospital. This year, 2017, he was decorated by the medal " PRABAL JANASEWASHREE" by the Honorable President of Nepal.

Dr. Sharma is a life member of the Nepal Medical Association (NMA), the Society of Surgeons of Nepal (SSN), a Founder and life member of the Nepalese Society of Neurosurgeons (NESON), Member of the World Federation of Neurosurgeons (WFNS), Member of the European Neurosurgical Society (EANS), Member of Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) and Member of American Association of Neurosurgical Society (AANS). He has recently received membership in the AANS/CNS Cerebrovascular Chapter, Vascular Neurosurgery Section of EANS.
To promote Neurovascular surgery and to encourage young neurosurgeons in Nepal, Dr. Sharma has founded the “Gopal Raman Sharma Neurovascular Oration” and “Gopal Raman Sharma Young Neurosurgeon” Awards in 2020. The Young Neurosurgeon Award will be distributed for the best paper in the National Congress of NESON each year. Similarly, the Neurovascular Oration medal will be awarded to the national or international neurosurgeon who has significant contributions to the field of Neurovascular surgery.
Dr. Sharma is the Past President of the Nepalese Society of Neurosurgeons (NESON) and Past General Secretary of the South Asian Association of Neurosurgical Society (SAANS). He chaired the neurovascular chapter of NESON from 2017 to 2020. In the future, Dr. Sharma is planning to establish subspecialty services of neurosurgery in Nepal.
