Knee Injury: The knee is the largest joint in the body and is made up of
bones, ligaments, cartilage, and tendons. Knee injury is a common problem that
can occur due to various reasons such as awkward movements, falls, collisions,
sudden twists, excessive force, overuse or sports injuries. Knee injuries can
range from minor sprains to severe ligament or cartilage tears.
Knee injuries can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty in
movements. The treatment options for knee injuries include rest, ice,
compression, elevation, physiotherapy, aspiration, arthroscopic surgery, and/or
open surgery.
Treatment
The treatment option depends on the severity of the injury.
Mild knee injuries may heal by themselves, but all injuries should be examined
and diagnosed by an orthopaedic surgeon. Prompt medical attention for any knee
injury increases the chances of a full recovery and better patient outcomes.
To prevent knee injuries, one should warm up joints and
muscles by gently going through the motions of the sport or activity,
stretching the muscles, wearing appropriate footwear, and building up muscle
strength and agility.
Knee Arthritis: Osteoarthritis typically develops due to wear and tear on the joints over time, leading to cartilage breakdown and subsequent pain and stiffness. As age related knee arthritis and other types of arthritis advances, the pain increases and later on become relentless.
Treatment
The painful arthritic knee joint is
often treated by painkillers, weight reduction, physiotherapy, joint injections and knee brace. In case of advanced
knee arthritis where all treatment
modalities have been tried and have failed to relieve the patient's pain and
improve his/her quality of life, only knee replacement surgery can help the
patient. Knee Replacement surgery is a very successful and gratifying procedure
with 95 percent success rate.
