The Department of Medical Education and Research aims to elevate the quality of medical education and research in Nepal through various initiatives. These include developing and implementing innovative teaching strategies, facilitating and promoting medical research, providing continuous professional development opportunities, and collaborating with global institutions. The department is responsible for producing skilled medical professionals and currently runs several key programs, such as the National Board of Medical Specialties (NBMS) postgraduate courses in MCh GI Surgery, MCh Urology, and MD/MS in Radiology, Pathology, and Anesthesiology. Additionally, the department offered the FCPS program from CPSP Pakistan, with 16 students having completed training across seven departments. Weekly CME programs are also conducted to keep medical professionals updated with the latest advances and to offer networking opportunities.
The department emphasizes research as a crucial component of its mission, requiring postgraduate students to undertake research projects and supporting faculty in their research endeavors. Ongoing projects include REMAP-CAP (a trial for community-acquired pneumonia) and MEGAROX (a study on enteric infections and antimicrobial resistance). International medical students can participate in observership programs to gain insights into the Nepalese healthcare system and enhance their clinical skills. The department also collaborates with the Nepal Intensive Care Research Foundation (NICRF) on the ICU Registry project, which aims to create a national database of ICU patients to improve patient care and outcomes.
